Cmmg? What's the score?

Yes, lots of opinions but basically they work as advertised but might need a little simple tuning to get the best from them.

Re: Cmmg? What's the score?
HI. I've got a CMMG which I've added quite a few bits to and of all the .22 semi's I've owned it's easily the most reliable. I once put 5,000 rounds through it without doing any cleaning whatsoever, after 4800 the bolt would not go fully home using the bolt release but would always seat the rounds and function perfectly "under it's own steam" very reliable rifles though i've heard some people have considerably less luck with them than others, there were a bad batch in the early days and the modern ones are much more reliable due to changes in the welding on the bolt etc.
One thing that's appalling is the magazines. I got something called a "catch 22" from the states that replaces the bolt catch with one designed to run hold open using S&W 15-22 mags, which are by far the best .22 AR mags around. You also have to fit the S&W mags with a little rubber spacer so they sit snug in the mag well but it all works extremely reliably.
So in summary, CMMG's are great dedicated .22 AR's, well built and very reliable and very "mil spec" in terms of replacing parts with standard AR15 parts etc. There are LOTS of .22milspec AR15's available in the UK now, lantac, icon arms, double star, spikes tactical, plus Southern gun which are mostly mil-spec.
I highly recommend the catch 22 for them though, running smith mags is much easier and more reliable than running anything else so I've found but as ever, YMMV!

Great first post, welcome to the forum safetyfirst :)
Re: Cmmg? What's the score?
Safetyfirst, I am not sure if you are welcome here making such a sensible first post, you need to be grumpy and complain a lot :)
I use Blackdog mags both gen 1 nylon feed lips and SS X-form mags both with no issues in my Spikes, if I hadn't invested in 16 magazine split across to Spikes I would have gone down the Boonie Packer Redi-Mag with S&W mags, I hear nothing but good things about them.
But saying all that, I like the look of the 10rd black SS X-form BD mags, gives a classic appearance.

Re: Cmmg? What's the score?
As I've said before oldskool I absolutely love my CMMG, it's actually the very reason I got back into shooting after many years away from the sport and as long as you use a reliable round like the CCI mini mag they are as reliable as they can be. I don't think I've ever had a problem since using a good quality HV round. Winchester and Remington are a "big no no" for reliability. Believe me, I know from experience.
I even use the CMMG Gen3 magazines successfully and I know they've been a problem for others. I think that as long as you only load them with say 20 rounds max and don't go all out trying to ram the stated 25 in them then they're fine. Perhaps they should have marketed them as a 20 round magazine. Would have been so much easier for them.
I actually want to go and have a look at a target after 20 rounds and if I want more capacity I just carry more mags...easy one really...:)
So quite simply the cheapest and best 22LR real steel AR15 on the market in my honest opinion. Loads of "mil spec" go faster bits available from everywhere.com and all for under a grand with a lifetime warranty, bargain! (unlike many of the UK made/fettled versions, lifetime warranty, um, don't fink so!)
I know I'm probably sounding like the UK based CMMG sales director and why not...love,love.love 'em! as some one said earlier. "What's not to like."
Put it this way, how many do you see on the second hand market. I've only ever seen one....That's gotta mean something!

Totally agree with the above post. I've only seen 3 in a year and one of those was mine, I will have to say the CMMG just recently bought is even better than the one purchased from Harrogate, didn't think that would ever happen.
Re: Cmmg? What's the score?
I bought a cmmg about 8 month back, it cost £960 with 2 mags and ive had no trouble with it, the spring on the mags was a bit on the strong side so I just cut the springs down a bit, now there perfect, like others have all ready said because they are mil spec you can get loads of accessories for them, some people I know have used airsoft accessories, for an airsoft butt you can pay about £30 or £40 for the same butt from Magpul your looking at £200.
One thing I love about mine is the accuracy, I didn't expect it to be as accurate as it is, ive put a drop in trigger in it and it shoots as well as a lot of target rifles at my club, 2 holes touching at 50 yard outside, and its not far of the same at 100 yard.

Re: Cmmg? What's the score?
Yes, My cmmg placed 2nd in A class at the derby open on multi target, against lots of tricked out 10/22's. Aside from one sig I was the only person not on a 10/22. And apologies for not being grumpy enough, I'll do my best to rectify this in future.
Ps. ar15's, all rubbish guns owned by people who've played too many violent computer games.
