Ruger Old Army Nitro Conversion

#1 Post by CDM5 »

I'm considering getting another MLP that doesn't make quite as much mess as my old Pietta.

The Ruger Old Army Nitro conversions seem to fit the bill, but I've got a few questions:

What calibre are they? I've seen them listed as both .45 and .44.

Can I use hard cast lead .429/.454 bullets with nitro powder in them?
Would save me having to get lead balls as I already have them for my rifles.

Are gunsmiths still doing nitro conversions for them? I know of Kershaw and Westlake, any others?

Thanks.

Forgot about them, spoke to them at the 2014 Shooting Show. I agree they're a good bunch.

I had a very interesting conversation with the owner of Anvil Conversions along these lines last year.

His opinion was that, being mostly bits from the Ruger Blackhawk, the ROA is quite capable of shooting a reasonable charge of nitro powder. They need to be fitted with a set of his shotgun-primer nipples and re-proofed, specifying the load (eg 8gn Herco).
