I know it was still legal until quite recently, for a resident of Chester to kill a Welshman with a longbow
Only if they were within the confines of the city walls after midnight

Interestingly the range officer had shouted "Is the Range Clear?" before they started.
Hadn't received a reply so continued with the shoot.
Unfortunately the "Patcher" was almost deaf, so didn't hear a thing.

Even then, with all that stuff obstructing view, I would have walked the range first before clearing it for fire.

I was taught that the RO should be the last one off the range, walking from the backstop to the firing point, checking that all the targets had been patched, and that everyone was clear...

We're only assuming the RO was at fault. He could have cleared the range but not seen the dipstick, or the dipstick could have been away from the range when cleared and headed back once the RO was back.
Either way, I blame the incredibly lucky dipstick :-)
