A question about cleaning rods

Hi guys,

I have just bought a 26" barrel Remington, and realised that my current .30 cal Tipton rod isn't going to be long enough. I'm going to have to buy a new road, but I'm thinking of getting a .22 cal rod so that I can clean my .223 and .308 with the same rod (currently I use a bore snake for the .223).

My question is, will a .22 rod be OK to use in a .308? I'm thinking of buying another Tipton, or possible a ProShot. What do you guys think?

You got it - buy a 223 cleaning rod and use it for everything! Both Tipton and Proshot make excellent rods.

Excellent, thanks for the confirmation. I was leaning more toward the Tipton as I was slightly concerned that a .22 rod would flex some in the 308 barrel and that the Proshot being stainless may cause damage.

I'm not familiar with either brand but will a .30 cal jag fit on a .22 cal rod?

Certainly all Pro-Shot jags and brushes fit their own rods for 20 Cal and upwards. I have not tried anything smaller. I only use Pro-Shot these days for all of my rifle cleaning.

Ovenpaa, would you think there is any risk of a .22 rod flexing in a .308 and causing any issues to the barrel?

That would depend on the tightness of your patch.

That makes sense. Maybe I had better stick with a Tipton CF rod.

I agree with Dromia, it is all down to how tight the patch is, personally I tend to use a smaller rod for 22-243/6mm and larger for 6.5mm and above.

Looks like you'll be ok with the Tipton, as Channel12 said i'd checking that the jags/brushes fit both rods. The Parker Hale/Bisley ones require the right brush/jag for the right rod
