I'm going to give that whirl when I'm up in Scotland next week.

The casing must get well sized down as it leaves the chamber and travels down the barrel.

Originally it would have been paper cases.

The standard slug making procedure in the Highlands used to be unpick the crimp and pour molten candle wax over the shot in the case filling it up to the top, you could either recrimp or just cut the crimp off. Let it set around the shot and away you go.

Hit a beast sized target out to 80 yrds.

Heard about people doing that but apart from the legality would be afraid of damaging the Gun.

For a cheap Slug for plinking I suppose you could just take a loaded Shotshell, run the rim off it with a bench grinder, remove the shot and replace with a suitable weight slug, then seal it with candle wax.

You could cast your own with say the Lee Mold or if you want to go really cheap, use a 15mm Ring Spanner as a mold. I'm told it will give you a slug of 0.680" and around 1oz. You will end up with something that looks like a bottle top, the outer ridges should ensure that it will squeeze safely through a choked barrel, but better to stick to a cylinder barrel.

Here's a photo of the slugs copied from an American Forum. I havn't tried it myself and if anyone tries it, remember the legality and safety aspects.

If you do decide to try this, make sure there is no choke in the gun. Reading up on the practice on the internet suggests that the increased diameter of the hull will get restricted sufficiently to rip the choke out of the barrel, possibly taking the front half of the barrel with it, not to mention overpressurizing the action with undesirable consequences ...
