.17 HMR still banned on Melville

Instead of bleating and whining on here that you cannot shoot .17 HME on Melville, I don't suppose that it has actually crossed you mind to actually contact the shooting manager at Bisley/NRA and ask if you can?
You may be pleasantly surprised at what you can do at Bisly by actually asking. But no, it is far easier for you to bump your gums and believe that the NRA have got things wrong. The NRA can be very accommodating if you explain exactly what you want to do. Ask nicely and you may be able to shoot on Melville when ther is no one forward of 1000 yds on ranges 0-1.

3-SS100 is NOT impossible to book,maybe just this weekend...

I am not an idiot so asking was the first line of approach. The only issue is velocity and that is the answer whenever asked. So unwind your knickers and let your brain breathe.

Colin - The 100 yard range on Short Siberia has fixed benches and shelter - You can walk round the target sheds (only adding a few minutes) to the butts and put up as many small targets you want on the large target faces...perfect for zeroing and group testing.

Yep same goes for Century, shoot n c's, scope or spotting scope, bino's & jobs a good un.

Interesting that you zero your hmr @ 50 Colin, I thought the most common zero was 100?

I know SS although I rarely shoot there these days. Whenever I tried to book during the week it seemed to be taken by the Nuclear Police or whomever. Most of my vermin shooting is done at 25 - 75 yards so I have found zeroing at 50 is the best compromise for this relatively flat shooting cartridge.

Listen, if you have a 17 hmr then you obviously have permission on sufficient land which will allow you to stick up a zero board at whatever distant you deem suitable and abuse to your hearts content. Why pay NRA range fees when you have your own facility to get the job done

Sure I can and do do that, but since I pay my NRA fees for full bore shooting and in support of the NRA it is as much the principle of being at Bisley and not being allowed to shoot a small insignificant calibre on Melville that rankles. At the other end of the scale I also shoot .338LM which again I cannot shoot at Bisley, but that is perhaps more understandable, even though the Army are allowed. One might ask if the Danger Area is sufficient for the Army then why not for civilian shooters? It seems Bisley is still fraught with inconsistencies, despite the admirable work done by Andrew Mercer to bring it into the 21st century.

However the issue is probably to do with the range template and who's shooting where and when, which may exclude .17 HMR...

...as someone else said, it's worth talking to the range office (nicely) as you never know...it might be worth asking about the running boar ranges next to Melville as they have zero targets at 50m...?
