The Gun. BBC vintage documentary.

#1 Post by legs748 »

I remember watching Christopher Roads in this series as a kid when it was repeated in the early nineties, it's a traditional documentary, big on facts. Chuffed to find it on YouTube!

A fine and authoritative series that set my gun ownership and shooting aspirations far beyond the fur and feather.

Are all the episodes available now on that site?

Up until recently there was only one.

I was fortunate to get a digital copy of the original video of the series 10 years ago from a chap in the Falklands.

The book of the series should be on everyones shelves.

We have discussed the series on here before.

It would give the health and safety boys a heart attack nowadays with the ad hoc hearing protection.

They are definitely worth a download from that site.

Yes all eight episodes are up Adam, some of the quality is a bit ropey due to being ripped from VHS.

Surely, someone with some professional video editing software could improve things a bit?

The episodes also seem to be out of order, originally there were ten.

1. The Great leveller
2. Ars Gratia Artis
3. The Greatest Benefactor
4. Riflemen Form
5. A Close Companion
6. Spearhead of Technology
7. Riflemen All
8. Almost Beyond Price
9. Accurate at a Mile
10. The Shape of Things to Come

The video site ones are out of order, have the introductions cut and don't have the original titles. Not sure which two are missing as I don't intend watching them on that site to find out.

Still good that they are there and a vast improvement on the one episode that was there for years.

You could do some filtering, colour correction, noise removal and clean up the audio with most reasonably good editing packages, but there's only so far you can go with VHS video, as it wasn't really that great to begin with.

Very many thanks for posting here that the series, or most of it, is available on U-Tube.

I remember watching the programmes as they were shown, and am very pleased to now be able to view them once more.
