To be fair, as the article points out, not everybody works to the same SOPs. Certainly there was nothing taught about keeping your helmeted head down when clearing machine guns in my day either. Mind you, in my day the machine gun was the Browning Model 1919A4!

Never had the pleasure, just handled, never fired..Over here it's designated MG3 before anyone complains

We were always taught to cock the GPMG BEFORE you opened the top cover, not sure if that would have helped here though. Looked like the round cooked off in the chamber
