Emergancy food holding

Out of interest, how many days non perishable food are people holding/hoarding in anticipation of a bad winter? This would apply mostly to people in the Boonies who might get snowed in for a few days.

These days we live in a small village in the Lincolnshire Wolds and all of the roads out of the village are significant hills so a smattering of snow is going to make things interesting, certainly the village has a history of being cut off in bad winters. We have a rack with tinned stuff and water plus a camping gas cooker, spare gas and a Dragonfly with fuel plus some other stuff so we are reasonably well covered in the event of blocked roads and electricity failures.

We had a large snowfall in Winnipeg the year I arrived. I rushed to the superstore to panic buy in good old British fashion, only to find the store empty and the shelves full! Canadians just wait for the snow to be cleared by the army of snowplows and front end loaders!

Prepared for winter I have the following.

I have 1/2 acre of Golden Wonders and Kerrs Pinks, half a dozen rows each of carrots and sweds, 2/3rds of which are clamped the rest in the ground earthed up for ready lifting.

Couple of stone of oatmeal.

Two stone of mutton, beef and venison tallow.

2 dozen bottles of Clynelish for water purification.

Five gallon of parafin for light.

2 ton of coal and four forty foot felled spruce trees for fuel.

Powder, shot and caps for meat.

Power was off for six days last winter in my area except for my house, so I didn't need to use anything but the neighbours were glad of the tatties and a bit of live quarry.
