Where to look for my Mosina?

#1 Post by Livefast »

I've just had my variation back from A and S Police with slots for .303 and 7.62x54 so feeling rather excited!

Having looked at the prices of varying rifles I think that I am going to start my collection off with a Mosin Nagant since having a young family impacts severely on budget and a Mrs scorned etc......I'm swinging towards an M38 / M44 as I have a bit of a thing for carbines.

Where are these best places to look for surplus rifles \ recommended shops as nowehere round here seems to have them. I'm not adverse to a roadtrip with RFD fees usually the price of a tank of diesel.

Henry Kranks. personally having owned both I would go for the long rifle. I will be acquiring one in the new year probably a sniper. Its the only version I have not owned. I like the 7.62x54 round.

2015 saw me add 2 Finnish M91 models to my safe....a VKT shotgun & a rare 'B' model rifle

Like the 7.62x53 & hope to get an accurate load developed for the rifle in 2016.
Luckily the bore slugged at 310 so it should be easy to load for...

Just after a normal variant at the moment, all of my guns are carbines but I realise that it could give me a disadvantage at distance. I doubt I will be shooting over about 300m for the time being. I will have to measure my cabinet to see if a full size one would fit in!

Missed out on a nice M38 on Pigeon Watch for £160.........gutted!

The Russians never "snipered" the M38/44........there are some "tower sniper rifles" floating about that have had a PU scope, often a repro, grafted on to them.A nice M91/30 can be had for the same money as a carbine including early hex receiver ones.
Be careful with Mosin snipers as there are a lot out there that aren't genuine and you can pay over the odds for a standard one that has had a cheap Chinese reproduction scope and mount fitted that is sold as a genuine sniper.
I've owned two M44s, a 1944 Izhevsk and a 1954 Romanian, and shoot a few more but neither were as accurate as a full length 91/30.

Try Derek at Simplyfirearms as he usually has a few in stock.

Check out mosinnagant.net and 7.62x54r.net for all things Vintovka Mosina

Give a man a gun and he can rob a bank.....give a man a bank and he can rob the world!.

More than a vested interest in 7.62x54r!

If you are a new shooter you need to consider recoil I find the long rifles much easier on the shoulder.

Only new to service rifles but recoil is a valid point, I have a Rossi .44 Mag carbine that kicks like a mule with a metal cresent butt plate.

I've got the length measurement for the 91\30 now so I'll see if the full size is an option.
