Long range .22

#1 Post by Dellboy »

I want to shoot .22 at 300 or maybe 400 yards (target only)
I will be using a .22 Anshutz taget rifle (55) and a 4-16 scope
What i am looking for is a flat shooting 22 cartridge any thoughts
and maybe an adjustable scope mount because im going to run out of clicks
cheers

Dellboy,
I regularly shoot .22 in a similar environment, trying to gain an advantage by using hotter ammo proved futile in terms of accuracy achieved, with far better results from slower more consistent rounds. For me the answer was to fit an angled base, giving me a 25 MOA head start.
I got mine from Kinney shooting supplies, a link to anschutz accessories here. http://kinneysshootingsupply.com/collec ... ccessories

Patrick is a great guy to deal with and will happily send to the UK. (Make sure you select the right bits though before ordering).

That depends on how much adjustment your scope has. Presumably it will have more than 25MOA Negative adjustment to get it to Zero, worth checking if you can go 25 MOA down on your scope as it is now before putting a 25 MOA rail on. That'll be how much adjustment you'll need with that rail... roughly (the rail its on currently might be out of alignment with the 25 MOA rail).

As for cartridge, as Ballistol recommends. keep it sub sonic and you should have more consistency, especially as I'd imagine most super sonics will become de-stabilized or effected as it goes transonic...

Here are a couple of articles that I have found helpful for long distance 0.22":

We shoot .22LR at 250 yards, against a 12" steel plate, and find that if we judge the wind correctly we hit it most times. We use Fiocchi HV cartridges fired from a CZ 452 with a heavy barrel and have a dedicated Hawke .22 scope fitted. The reticle has aiming marks for ranges out to 200 yards with standard ammo, but we found that using the HV ammo the 200 yard graticle was spot on for 250 ...

We have an annual competition which is ten rounds at 200, 300 and 500 yards. Open sights only. Eley Club is what I use but go with whatever suits your rifle.

Yes, the rifle is zeroed for 25 yards, but this is achieved by using the down elevation adjustment of the scope in conjunction with the 25 MOA rail. This in turn allows more of the scope's adjustment to be used to provide elevation.

In practice, with a 25 yard zero, I can use reticle marks up to 175 yards, but have to dial in adjustments for further out. Any one of the usual ballistic calculators will give you a drop table that will help you immensely. Having said that, it's all eyes to the spotting scopes when firing, to try and help guide the shooter. Reactive targets are the order of the day to maximise the fun!
