Black Dog 25 Mags in V22 Southern Gun Co. Rifle - problems.

#1 Post by Dark Skies »

Has anyone else tried the Black Dog mags (223-alike size) in a V22 Southern Gun Co. rifle and had problems?

I bought two of them recently (with the longer hold open follower) and neither feed at all well.
The first round may or may not feed correctly - usually requiring the bolt to be pushed home a few mm. After firing the first round each and every round thereafter will jam at about 45 degrees with the bullet partially in the breech. Makes no difference if you load the mag with ten rounds or the full 25.

One of the mags feels very 'catchy' / 'notchy' during loading and is really difficult to get more than ten rounds in before binding up. The other doesn't seem to suffer from this. Both won't feed properly though. I'm using CCI Minimag ammunition - so hardly budget quality. I have tried a few other known brands and all suffer the same.

We have tried relieving one of the magazines with a Swiss file to bring it closer to the Southern Gun Co. dimensions in the relevant area but it made no difference.

From enquiries I made when a V22 came up for sale here, was that there are specific BD mags made for the V22. Others don't work, as you may have found!
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

I had a bunch of Black Dog Mags for my Sig522 and I just could not get the things to work reliably. Hardly surprising when you consider that they can be bought for $20 over the pond. (I know they don't cost that here in UK). Eventually I stuck them all in the bin and bought a couple of Lantac mags which have functioned perfectly. You may want to view Lantacs website and see if they do a mag which suits your purpose.

Black Dogs are all marked up with the make/model/type of gun they are designed to fit.

What markings are on your two?
(Vested interest as have an eye on a Bremmer/ M261)

I have just bought a Sig 522 SWAT. The mag that comes with the rifle is branded with the Sig Sauer name but is actually made by Black Dog. I bought 4 more spare mags from RilfeMags UK. The black 25 round version with steel lips. They were rather tight to load and I struggled to get the last round in each mag. I left them loaded for a while and that helped. At the range they worked perfectly loaded with CCI MiniMags or CCI standard velocity.

I bought the mags from Rifle Mags as they specifically mentioned Southern Gun in their listing.

They are marked V-22

If they're V-22 marked & not working, send them back for exchange.

Most Black Dogs do what they're supposed to do & they have a very good customer service record.

I'll definitely be sending one back for a refund. I doubt if an exchange will be worth bothering with based on past experience - two arrived and two didn't work.

Unfortunately we tried to make one of the magazines work by fettling it with a file so the warranty has been broken. Although it didn't work when it arrived and it'd be the same if returned I doubt if the vendor would wear it.

Thanks - have looked at their website. Seems they do a mag that might fit the V-22 theoretically (their words) but untested. I've offered to test a few for them.
