Shotgun BP cartridges

#1 Post by legs748 »

After a lovely day on the clay ground introducing a mate to my lovely Damascus hammer gun I was thinking about loading some cartridges with black and making some smoke, has anyone got any guidance to offer for finding loads and components? Can I use new fangled components such as normal shells and plastic wads and just substitute the powder? I'm more interested in doing it as an exercise for learning rather than making a super efficient load, just for the stench and smoke and the ultimate reason anyone ever needs - because I can!
It was working when i left it...........

....or to put it another way...all options seem to work, with varying degrees of "success"

Paper hulls = not easy to find
Brass hulls = not cheap
Plastic hulls = probably pin-holed after one use with black

Other than that, have at it

Gamebore still produce them and you might be able to get them via Just Cartridges. I have not dealt with the company so this is not an endorsement.

They are about a £1 a pop.

Rolling your own is the only way to go.

We had a few black powder shooters at our Boxing Day clay shoot. Very impressive bang, smoke and flame. What's not to like (apart from the cost!!)
