Can anyone recommend a red dot for an AR22? Are Vortex any good? Thanks.

Most definitely the Burris AR-332 Prism sight. Black, red, green reticle colour settings . Defaults to black if power fails. Long range drop compensation, fixed 3 power magnification includes flip up covers. screw in sunshade fits on Picatinny rail, or the Burris AR 335 for 5 times. Not cheap though but the best never is. Vortex are very good, I look through them occasionally and I am always impressed by the clarity plus who else gives such a warranty?

I'm going to hold out for the Vortex Sparc 2 AR in the Summer I think. I'm told it is worth the wait, but I'll have a look at it at the Shooting show.

I was looking at the Sparc AR but then I had the chance to have a good look at the Shield SIS, http://www.shieldpsd.com/shop-2/sis-swi ... center-dot its an awesome bit of kit, It gives all the options you could want, 1 moa dot for precision, 8 moa for fast up close targets, circle and dot combinations with both dot sizes. 3 levels of auto brightness and 12 levels of manual adjustment on the brightness. I'm really impressed and have ordered a couple.

That looks very nice Then again it should be for the price as its getting into EoTech/Aimpoint territory.

Personally i like my sights to be 'proportinate' to the gun they go on so i think the micro-sights look a bit daft on a full-sized rifle, but i can completely understand why someone would put one on for the weight savings.

I've got a Burris FFIII but for the above reason i wouldn't put it on an AR and also because its not well protected. If you're doing dynamic shooting with barriers etc, or are just prone to dropping the gun/rough handling it would be easily damaged. You can get protective hoods/'ears' for them but the one fore the III seems to be quite hard to come by. My III has been on an MP5 clone (replaced with a Bushnell TRS-25 before the rifle was sold), was a 45 degree close-quarters sight on my VZ58 for a while (removed as i was paranoid about it getting broken in the cabinet) and now lives on my .22 1911.

If i was on a budget i'd probably got for a Sightmark Ultrafire (what i have on my new MP5) or a Sparc/Strikefire. If money wasn't an issue it'd be an EoTech or Aimpoint, depending on the type of shooting.

I think a lot depends on the shooting your planning on doing, I have been happy using cheaper red dots but last weekends tunnel match proved that when you are shooting at small plates at 100m then a quality red dot that doesn't flare is the way to go. I still took third place in open devision but I know the sight held me back. Especially as my 90/22 worked faultlessly all day.
