I'm guessing gardening. The bottom one is beautifully simple. The top one - the blade would be good for prunning - is it possible that there is a 'blade cover' missing (to protect the palm), so that the other bit can be used for splitting/prying ?

Would work well for pruning and opening walnuts - you'd want a good pair of gloves on though...

Well Calitzdorp is in South Africa. For cutting boerewors or droewors (South African sausages)? Is the exposed metal part of the finger ring sharp?

Only the blade is sharp - and very sharp too! And not a bad guess ... but not quite!

It is a Biltong knife, used for taking small strips off the larger piece.
