Recommend a bolt action .22LR

#1 Post by Geek »

I have a Sako Quad in .22LR/.22WMR, however, I am not impressed with Sako (and would not give any room in my safe again): therefore what .22LR bolt action would you recommend?

Use will be plinking / target shooting at 50/100m, only criteria is no wooden stocks.
Regards,

Well, I was just about to recommend a CZ 452...

CZ offer the American synthetic in the CZ 455 model and for a rifle less than £300 out the door what's not to like? If this rifle is anything like the CZ 452 I have then you will have a nice, accurate rifle that doesn't cost an arm or a leg.

I've had the cz and it's tac driver, I've had the anchutz 1417 I think was the model..it's a carbine with thumbhole stock...I was unimpressed with that. I sold my saki finnfire years ago and always regretted it...I bought another unused one last year and could not be happier... It's the most accurate. 22 sporting bolt action rifle I've ever owned....through the same hole with subs at 50m (benched mind you)

The finnfire were so good that the second hand price was more than the original price....this is why sako brought out the finnfire 2 as the quad did not do well and has a terrible reputation......

I do not know what the finnfire 2 is like nor do I care...I absolutely love mine..
When someone says "it's not about the money" you know what? it probably is all about money!

The Ruger 77/22 is available in a sythetic stock and is a decent rifle.

CZ455 comes in every stock variant you can imagine including zombie green-splattered black plastic if that floats your boat...

Without knowing whether you're shooting scoped or irons, rest/bipod, multi- or single shot etc it's quite hard to get more precise. A second-hand Anschutz 54 single shot action in a custom stock would be the most accurate rifle you could ever hope for, but might be a big of a lump to carry across a field etc.

Another vote for a Sako Finnfire (original) here as I have one and my dad has one. incredibly accurate - however it fails as it's a wooden stock and a Sako :p

CZ's down the club have good accuracy and as mentioned can come in synth stock.

Depending on what it's for - for accuracy - BSA MArtini's are cheap and difficult to beat, maybe take on a project to build something from one, not applicable if you need magazine fed rather than single shot.

Depends what you wanna do really.

Having read kungfu's post above this, I think I'm re-iterating what he's said somewhat.

In 40 years of shooting, I had never owned a .22 bolt gun. I changed that earlier this year and bought a Weirauch HW60J. Bloody brilliant! It does however, have a wooden stock...
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!

Some nice looking rifles image searching for that model. Good choice. Not something I've come across before.

40 years and no .22lr bolt gun. I am actually a little impressed :o

...I'm not - operating a bolt AND squeezing the trigger were too many individual stages to fink about & gave him brain freeze: he's more of an "insert mag., pull trigger until empty, replace mag." type monkey
