Pros and cons of .22 RF and 17 HMR

Going to pop and look at some kit over the weekend.
Guage prices that kinda thing, but will more than likely buy second hand. I'll see how the land lies closer to the time of purchase.

You certainly aren't going to get a big thumbs up in a club shooting rimfire disciplines.

For rabbits however it's a dream rifle. Flat as a board out to 125 yards and dead bunny guarantee out to 200 which is hard to do at night with a .22lr.

Lots of talk about ammo issues. Not had any personally. I wouldn't part with my CZ.

Reading mixed reports ammo issues, then guys saying they haven't had any issues.
Could this be just bad batches of ammo, ( pictures of cracks is crimps ect )

Many people talk of cracks at the neck but that doesn't seem to affect how they shoot. You are not going to be reloading them anyhow.

Have to say I really like the Magpul kit for the 10/22

I get offered a lot of 17HMR rifles to sell by bunny bashers, no complaints about the cartridge it does what everyone says however the price of the ammunition is prohibitive for many who use it for vermin control. Yes it reaches out to bunnies that the humble .22 rf won't reach but the reality is for most of them 80%+ of their quarry killed is shot within .22rf range and that gets to be expensive shooting for not very much actual return in dead vermin. The ones out of range one night for the .22rf will be the ones in range the next time they are out.

The only time I'll take the 17HMR out is for the corvids on which they are lethal.

Like I said - horses for courses. I have a .17 HMR, and a Ruger 10-22 with suppressor. What I take changes on any given day. If I am shooting bunnies at dawn or possums after dark, the suppressed Ruger gets the nod so as not to annoy my neighbours. When daylight comes and ranges step out a bit, the 17 HMR comes with me.

.222 with a cast flat nose boolit - very cheap to run and does everything that a 22 will do and more.
17HMR - I've never had the desire to use one.

For me the big advantage of 17 HMR over 22 is the much reduced ricochet risk.

The 17 HMR bullets seems to disintegrate on impact, but if you hit a stone with a 22 you sometimes hear the ricochet whistling off.

If the ground is stoney then I will use the 17 HMR.
