New to me..but not new..

#1 Post by falco67 »

A Martini Henry Bonehill conversion to .22.

Unfortunately there is a shortage of marks. I am told 1878 as a build date and 1904 as a conversion date but I don't know.

Its been to the range and its certainly better than me at 50 yards and I am really pleased with it.

If anyone can look at the photos and provide more info, it will be gratefully received.

regards

Geoff

Tis a cracker and looks just the same as my WW Greener Martini action 12 bore. With a thinner barrel of course! Hows it shoot?

Sorry for not replying sooner. I'm pleased I'm not the only one who likes these old rifles. :good:

The rifle seems to fluctuate in its accuracy, so looking at the hand guard, it didn't look right, so I stripped it down and it looks to have had a problem and repair.

I suspect that the barrel should be free floating, but the hand-guard was tightened so that it was pressing on the barrel. (photo 3) If its not like this, its loose :bad:

There is also a newly cut wedge groove cut into the barrel. (photo 2)

Looking at the photo of the inside of the hand grip, the screw on the left screws into a captive bolt in the newly cut groove. The screw on the right attaches to nothing and is free floating and is not long enough to reach the barrel of the rifle. I suspect that there should be a pressure pad of some sort to below this screw to alter the tension of the hand guard in relation to the rifle. You can see that there is a mark in the wood to the left hand side of the screw.

hope that makes sense and any suggestions/ideas would be most welcome

regards

Geoff
