Accuracy

What kind of accuracy are you prepared to accept from a bp revolver.

Just hitting the target at 25yards or all shots within say 5 inches?

All in the black for a PL14 target at 25 yards off hand as a minimum.

They should all go into the 9 ring of the same target properly rested, best to shoot rested as shooter ability varies from day to day and person to person.

A BP revolver is capable of excellent accuracy at 25 yards, all shots in an inch or two. Good pistol shooters score mid 90's with one hand at 25 yards regularly

I'd say an or two is optomistic. An S&W K38 with 148gn wadcutters would give that if shot well. I'd say 3 to 4 inches with a half decent shooter and a tight M/L revolver.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Look at the scores on the MLAGB web site. Comps are usually won with 94 to 96 and, don't forget, this is with the shots being at least 50% over the scoring line.

I put 30 .36 rounds (Pietta Colt 1851) down our 25 yard range on Tuesday. On the first three targets I was happy to just get them on the black. The fourth target I was getting a pretty decent grouping within four inches. On the fifth target I had four balls spread around within two inches of the centre, one dead on centre, and one flyer on the white. By then the range was just too smokey to continue. I was dead chuffed though.

With my Pietta .44 Remington New Model Army ... not so good. Not only am I missing the target but sometimes I'm missing the huge piece of brown paper I' drape behind it to see where the flyers are going.. I'm experimenting with different suppliers of balls on that one.

The Colt locks up tight but is easily 20 years old. Maybe older I think the Remington is about 10 years old. Both have been serviced with new kits.

I am a rubbish pistol shooter, evidenced by the state of my target frames..

Bought a flintlock, and now it is more about whether it goes bang than accuracy.

I am working on it and envy my fellow shooters that are as accurate as I am with a scoped Marlin.

According to the scores posted, revolver comps are won in the low 90s, with the remaining positions from second downwards, in the 70s and 80s. Scoring shows the largest proportion of scoring shots are in the 7, 8 and 9 rings. The MLAGB use the standard ISSF 50m pistol target for their 25m comps. This has a 50mm (2 inch) 10 ring with the other rings 25mm (1 inch). The outside of the seven ring on this target gives a scoring circle some eight inches in diameter.

I think you're probably right Sim. I won a BP shoot at one of the Anno Domini pistol events with a 96 but thinking back it was scored as best 10 of 13 shots. My K38 Mod 14 (Target) when shot from a ransom rest would keep them all within the 10 ring but not as tight as my .32 Pardini

Am I making the mistake of not using a filler therefore the ball is seated quite deep into the cylinder?

Would that adversely affect accuracy?
