Not with a bang but with a splutter

A while back i bought some of those fancy pants Pyrodex Pistol Pellets.

Thought I'd give them a go as I've heard Pyrodex is a tad better than Triple 7 if you must use other than BP.

Popped them in a squeaky clean cylinder, with new nipples, popped a lubed wad on top, rammed the balls home, and placed CCI No 11 caps firmly in place and commenced fire. Not

All six caps went off just fine. No bang. Not even a pppphhutt. (And yes, I waited an appropriately safe time between each shot, or , rather, hope of a shot).

Removed cylinder. Removed nipples. Ran through each nipple with an acupuncture needle to clean. Replaced nipples. Recapped. Went to shoot each load and the same again.

There was a moment of madness when I considered removing the nipples and charging with a few grains of Triple 7 to kick-start the ensemble but I thought better of it. :)

Fortunately I was able to remove the nipples and push the load out of the front of the cylinder using a small punch. I got most of the crumbled pellets out too. Some slight residual pellet caked in the rear of the cylinder - I recapped and attempted to fire off the residue to see if it would at least burn when exposed to ample air. Only one pinch of crap went off.

These are all dry and have been appropriately stored. Although I shan't bother with them again ... what does it take to set these things off? Do they require some kind of super cap out of a shotgun or something?

Anyone else tried these things?

It IS a decent gun club - I'm just beset with a few niggling obstacles, that's all.
When it comes to pistol calibre and .22 rifles we do extremely well in competitions.
We even have a successful Olympic shooter among our ranks.

Besides, I think there's a forum niche for being an authority on shooting at a powderly disadvantage. :)
I'm going to give crushed matchstick heads a go next.

The ruskies used to use crushed match heads in a vodka slurry for repriming .22 rimfire cases for reloading.

Any club that restricts legal shooting at their club isn't worth the candle in my opinion, olympic shooters doesn't mean anything other than they are olympic shooters to me.

My main club restricts me shooting my .308.. Something to do with it blowing holes in the back wall. Should I leave then?

We shoot 308 on our 25yrd range, we just make up loads that are within the range certificate limits.

At my club you can shoot anything so long as it is legal, safe and conforms to the range certificate.

My main club is a gallery rifle club, so certificated for rimfire only. My other club is certificated for pistol calibers with a muzzle energy limit and .45 calibre limit.

There is a private range locally which limits supersonic rounds to moderated rifles only, which leaves occasional organised MOD days for the big stuff.

Please stop being so disparaging about other ranges, without member support they will all close and where will that leave the shooting community

Not disparaging at all, it is surely obvious that if you wish to shoot black powder guns them you should join a club that encourages you to do so, just as if you wish to shoot 308 you should join a club that allows you to do so.

I believe that if clubs were more inclusive and encouraged all shooting then they would have more members, less elitism/discipline snobbery and shooting would be in a far healthier place in the UK.

The pistol calibre limit on a range certificate is a totally meaningless and stupid condition that only confuses and complicates what the range can use, all that is needed on a range certificate is maximum calibre, maximum velocity and maximum muzzle energy. Sounds like that range certificate was issued by that most cretinous of "national" organisations the NSRA.
