Shotgun Legal Question

Hi all,

I live in Manchester and my Wives parents are down in Hertfordshire, there are some good shooting days and clay days on down there.

My question is if I want to shoot down there whilst I am at the in laws for a few days would I need a cabinet at their house to safely store the guns for a few days?

Just curious if it’s possible?

You have to take "reasonable precautions" to prevent unauthorised access to your guns. For me that would be locking the barrels and stock in the boot of the car and keeping the forend with me.

You won’t find anything that says you HAVE to have a cabinet. It’s just that’s what’s pushed as the standard. It’s down to you (and the judge if it went tits up ) as to what you think is reasonable. Disassembly and parts in different areas would be my go to.

You can buy a cable lock and or a trigger lock.
If you then secure the separate parts, one in
the car boot one in a secure location in the house
and the third closer to you, I would imagine that
is taking reasonable precautions in securing it.

Ile second the cable locks,i got a couple off the bay nice and slim cable plastic coated and complete with lock and three keys each,the cable easily goes down the barrel and up the other barrel and locks to a anchor i have in the boot i have the barrels in a sleeve with no ends just for ease,just makes me feel a bit better but security is your responsibility,you could also use it in the house your visiting i once had the barrels secured to a radiator .

I went on a shooting holiday in 2016. Advertised as c/w gun cabinet, yep, sure did for 4 guns! My mate took 3 shotguns and 1 rifle. I took 2 shotguns and 4 rifles. Needless to say, we had trigger locks for each gun, as a large steel safe in my 4x4 Everthing was broken down and secured. It’s having the foresight to make security as good as possible.
