With my free pistol and air pistol I practice at home by dry fireing the pistols. When I was looking for a black powder revolver I wrapped a small piece of cotton around the hammer to try the trigger on the two pistols I wanted to try and decided the trigger on the Rogers and Spencer was the one I preferred. The cotton pad worked for this simple test but is it possible to dry fire a black powder pistol without damaging the hammer and nipples?
I thought of removing the nipples?
Leaving spent percussion caps on the nipples?
Any advice will be appreciated.

Re: dry fire-ring
I use a small square of thick leather. Trouble is that I have to reset it each trigger pull.

Re: dry fire-ring
If want to dry fire then I have a set of old nipples for the purpose.

Trouble with the leather is that it can leave a plug in the nipple.
I have also used nipples filled with lead, and fitted with the ends of brass panel pins but an old set of nipples is just simpler.

Re: dry fire-ring
Actually, if the nipples are set up correctly, the hammer should stop just short of contacting them.
