The problem is there are flash hiders, which actually hide (diminish) muzzle flash and there are flash hiders which are just called that for ease of reference and lineage/development, the one pictured here falls firmly into the latter IMO as a descendant from proper flash hiders.

A 'proper' flash hider, IMO, is one such as that fitted to a Colt XM177 or the combustion chamber style type like on the AK SU74. The thing is though, both are designed to reduce the muzzle flash to aid the shooter, not to disguise the signature of the gun from the 'enemy' as with a suppressor (sound moderator), which presumably is what the government/licensing authorities are actually concerned about.

The 'control' of such items is made even more irrelevant in the UK due to the prohibition of firearms for which they would be of any use, i.e. semi and full auto full-bore rifles.

The AKs-74u muzzle device is actually a "muzzle booster" designed to increase gas pressure to cycle the operating system reliably in all conditions due to the combination of a very short barrel and an intermediate cartridge and also to burn off any remaining propellant, it certainly isn't designed as a flash hider.

A better example would be the long flash hider of the type found on the Dragunov and the FN FAL.

Just read your blog Ste regarding flash hiders and the home office response to your question.
So...Having removed the flash hider from my AR15 and fitted a Moderator am I now in the possession of an illegally held flash hider as I don't have a separate slot for it?

This shouldn't be debated in the for sale section and no it doesn't need a slot as long as you have a suitable rifle to put it on.
