Is there such a thing as a reasonably priced Springfield?
Evening Ladies and Gents.
For quite a while now I've been quite keen on getting an M1903 Springfield rifle, preferably an A1, not A3 as I prefer tangent sights to peep sights.
However, I 1) cannot seem to find any - the M1903 seems to be rare as anything, and 2) if I do find one, they're over £1000!!
I don't get it. Why? You can get a No1/No4 for about £250-£300, a Mosin-Nagant is about £275 - Mausers are a bit more. So why is a bog-standard M1903 over a grand?
Regards

Its probably all to do with location , location , location , European rifles being more readily available to us so therefore cheaper , whereas US arms went back to the states and their access to firearms being easier to obtain they soon ended up in private collections .

Dave is right, its a function of rarity over here, the colonials like to hold on to them and many have been released gradually to civilian shooters over the years through the marksman scheme. Also it is expensive to bring them in from the states unless you can get a container full so that adds to the cost to the customer over here. They don't go for bargain "milsurp" prices in the states either.
The 03 does have an aperture on the rear sight, its a derivative of the classic Buffington sight fitted to the Trapdoor.
The Springfiled in all its guises is one hell of a cast boolit shooter.

Bugger. I was hoping someone would say: "£1000? They're sellin' for £200 where I am. Wait a tick - I'll send you one".

Maybe $1000 upward for a nice 03. Down to $800 for a shooter thats see some external wear. That was the last time I looked at it 18 months ago.
If you were over there and were to trawl gunshops and pawn brokers you could pick on up at less perhaps.

They're about $300 across the Pond.
How do I import - can I just ask a mate in the US to wrap one up and post it to me?
I doubt it's that easy :cool2:
