Rust prevention
Is WD40 any good for wiping on tools for rust prevention purposes or is oil better?

Re: Rust prevention
oil is always better. 3in1 on a rag, wipe over.

Re: Rust prevention
WD40 = Water Dispersant + 40th formula that finally worked.
Rust prevention, oil or grease dependant on where or what or for how long.

Pillar drill mainly as I noticed today its "on the turn"
I'll also want to do hand saws too and whatever else needs it.

if it's the pillar of the pillar drill, grease is your best bet

Re: Rust prevention
only if you arent using it. it'll be a pain everytime you put something on it. especially wood.
with the table, you might find a light surface rust is actually preferable to having to degrease it everytime you need it, and instead, just give it a periodic go over with a soft wire brush

Re: Rust prevention
For the table use a wax. Beeswax works well. Put a tiny (and I mean tiny) bit on the table and work it in with your hand. Rub it well as you need to warm it up for it to spread properly. Keep rubbing until its smooth and then buff off with a cloth. It won't interfere with your work piece (in fact it will help with moving thing around easily) and it will go some way to prevent rust.
