6.5x55 Swede to 6.5 Creedmoor
A hypothetical question: Just curious.
A Shilen Varmit barrel chambered in 6.5x55 Swedish is it possible to cut the thread off that attaches it to the action re cut the threads and re chamber it in 6.5 Creedmoor or would you have to chop the whole of the chamber off or is it just a no no.

You'd just need to look at the SAAMI drawings for each cartridge and make sure the Creedmoor reamer is of sufficient diameter to over-cut what's left of the 6.5x55 chamber. Without doing that myself, my guess is that it would be 'on'.Alpha1 wrote:A hypothetical question: Just curious.

Give it a go and let us know. My main concern would be barrel diameter at the new shoulder - where it will mate to the action - will that be reduced?

Something along similar lines was done with some M91 Mosin's that were captured by the Germans and passed on to the Turks during WWI.They cut a section off the chamber end of the barrel, thus shortening the barrel shank, then recut the chamber etc to suit the longer, thinner case of the 8mm Mauser cartridge.
Poland also did much the same thing with a number of M91's, converted them to 8mm Mauser and gave them the designation Wz.91/98/25
photo below shows the much shortened barrel shank on a 8mm converted M91......

I checked the sammi drawings there is a difference in the shoulder and neck part of the 6.5 Creedmoor case. I think I would probably have to remove the whole of the 6.5 chamber. The Gun Pimp wrote:You'd just need to look at the SAAMI drawings for each cartridge and make sure the Creedmoor reamer is of sufficient diameter to over-cut what's left of the 6.5x55 chamber. I decided to go with 6.5x47 I have ordered the reamer and gauges.
In the mean time my 7.62x54R go no go gauges have arrived. So I can press on with that.
