Good shooting, some times it just comes together - It's the unexplained odd flyer that really winds me up.
This was a fairly tidy card, although only 25 yds. Scoped benchrest (BSA International Mk5/Tenex)
And this is five shots at 25yds with my Sako Finnfire.
Exactly, it’s the unexplained fliers I am looking to get rid of.
You know when it’s you and you pull a shot, or you’ve read the wind wrong but that one that sounds slightly different and jumps an inch to the right, that gets my goat
Plus I’m a proper Norbert and enjoy working this stuff out
I have just signed up for the club Summer 25 yard Benchrest with my old Mk2 Inter (Once I have found or made an extractor spring) At least I know what to aspire to in the oldie stakes 1066!

Data data data data l b****y. love. a data collection morning.
This morning was all about the sorted SK Long Range Match.
it was 18degrees with wind 0-5mph so not perfect, but good enough. I’m using the Ruger Precision Rimfire which people will tell you in not accurate, bo...cks I say! I have fitted mine with a JARD trigger (it fell off a bench and the factory one snapped), aluminium foil bedded it and torqued the action screws- all of about 10mins work.
I set up the paper at 50y and shot 10 rounds to warm the rifle up. I know from previous experience the first 5 down the spout in a session are all over the shop.
I then shot three groups of five of unsorted ammo as my control.
I then shot three groups of five for each length, where I had enough of that length.
I then shot a control set again in case I’d fatigued (about 80mins of shooting) and that had an impact.
Finally I shot another group of 25 to finish up.
What did I learn?
- my cold bore shot shoots 2.2MOA left, and by cold bore I mean only enough time to walk to the target, make some notes and walk back.
- I believe the rifle shoots best in the 25-26 length, it’s not hugely conclusive but it’s enough for me.
- the POI seems to move based on length which would account for larger groups, although this isn’t hugely conclusive.
- the rifle is accurate as hell, one of those 26 groups is 0.273” edge to edge so that’s a group size of 0.053”
Will I sort all my ammo going forward? Hell yes, all of it is accurate but I think I’ll get best results shooting 25-26 and more consistent results shooting the same length together.
