It’s a Remington 597 butchered into an airsoft body (I have a defence).
Still needs some fettling to get it all lined up, at the moment it just takes the 597 mag but at some point I might try and hack something together out of the airsoft magazine shell.
Is it perfect, hell no, but I wanted a lockdown project
That looks rather neat

The only reason I can think of, is so they don't get mixed up with the "real" magazines...
That's the current .22lr magazines. I have some here.
How do they currently work? A conversion kit?
They are part of the old H&K kit, I don't think they work with the A2 but it's a .22LR cartridge conversion kit similar to the Ciener kit (which CMMG et al copied). I believe there is a similar thing for the A2.

Good deals with Paul101, Charlotte the flyer, majordisorder, Charlie Muggins, among others. Thanks everybody.

When guns are outlawed, only Outlaws will have guns
My guess is that it'll be worn out L85A2s that are refurbed and then fitted with the existing H&K .22 conversion kit. Maybe with a new dedicated .22 barrel, or more likely with the sub calibre adapter chamber bit from the kit bonded in place. I can't see H&K making a new rifle for a (probably) very small order...
A number of years ago Sabre Defence had a .22 L85 on their stand at the IWA show. I don't think that version will be going anywhere though...
