Another old gun in Denmark

#1 Post by ovenpaa »

We finished shooting early and drove to Thorsminde Harbour a fishing port a few miles from us and as this is a shooting forum....

This old gun in DK is a Fried Krupp 105mm from the U-59 which struck a German mine off the Horns Rev (Reef) on the west coast of Jutland in 1917. SO an own goal in that respect. All but 4 of the crew were lost. The submarine was located again in 2002.

You can see a conning tower behind but having seen it before I didn’t read the sign again so I am not sure if it is part of U-59 or not.

Apparently the conning tower is from U-20 ...

For those who don't know; the full structure is called the Fin (Sail in the US) and the conning tower was a watertight compartment within the Fin - sometimes accessible whilst under water but often not. One or two crew would be stationed in there to use the short periscopes and direct torpedo attacks.

Ovenpaa: In your opinion would the cannon be able to be fired today if the bore had no obstruction and all the parts needed were cleaned and oiled? Just curious.

It is in remarkably good condition however some parts are still rusted together so my honest opinion is no, this will never be a shooter again. We went past it again today and stopped again as the storm had blown out and I found another one!. No idea what it is but I will post a picture when I have got it off the camera.

No idea what this is off, the barrel was open and the rifling was still visible although corroded

That picture took me back,
As a child I played on this, as did many thousands of other children before and after me, as can be seen from the shiny barrel. In my memory it was a big old beast and you were brave if you shimmied up to the end of the barrel, but looking at it now it does not appear to be all that big.
In my memory I thought it swivelled round, but actually it is fixed on place, obviously I had an active imagination! I do remember that it is pointed at a church steeple, perhaps not the faith of the people installing it?
Located in Ward Park Bangor Co Down, checks on the Internet all confirm that it was a submarine piece but type, calibre and dates are all up in the air. Just shows how quickly information is forgotten - can you imagine placing a captured scud rocket launcher in your local park today? different times in deed.
