Polchraine wrote: Wed Jun 19, 2024 9:31 am So much is now done at the "push of a button".

The PNC check - takes a few seconds. They have a social media and on-line "scraper" which apparently comes back with a Red/Amber/Green rating - again at the push of a button. Both of those are done by admin staff.
Please explain how the social media and on-line scraper work? How does it detect things like posts on here which aren’t in my name etc? What product is being used?

I don't know what they use, but there are almost certainly databases with the large web companies that associate "TallGuy" with "PigTrotterMan" with "JohnSmith of YourTown" with "Johnnie1952Smith@mailbox.com" &c. You will register on a site as "TallGuy" but choose to use your JohnSmith@... email address and that will link to another site where you are registered as "PigTrotterMan" with the same email, then on another site you use "PigTrotterMan" and a different email, and from that email a link to other user names and so on. What agreements the police forces have with Google, Amazon, ebay, PayPal, Facebook, Instagram &c to access background data we will never know, but they will certainly be going through all of those.

Well that’s interesting but as I use multiple e mail addresses and multiple usernames on forums etc, unless all could be linked (and I run them separately) it’s going to be a very disjointed picture!

Even then, Google, Amazon, ebay, Facebook can build a picture. If you logon from your PC or phone to get email, there will be an IP address and if that is the same for two email addresses the systems will put a potential link in place. If your IP address changes and the system sees the same two emails from the same new address it reinforces the link ... and so on.

Have a read of this: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/prope ... age-guide/

It shows how much under the counter data transfer is happening.

Same with the bets on a July election ... look how simple it was to track down those and link a betting accont name to an MP, police officer, &c

For my grant application last year I was asked to give usernames for the forums and socials that I use. I suspect any withholding of online identities subsequently discovered would be looked on poorly.

Online or paper?

Either way, completely out of order....they'll be asking for evidence of haemorrhoids next.

The web scrapers and other data bases do that so you may well be unaware of them looking at your social media post! They can look all they like at my facebook - I have a username, no friendslinked, no posts, no pictures ...

Didn't really bother me TBH. Seems like a sensible precaution.
