The assignment of a danger area template for a round is a complex issue. It involves determining such factors as maximum overall range, vertex abscissa (simply put the maximum height the bullet reaches in achieving that maximum range), maximum range and vertex abscissa for the round fired at a specific quadrant elevation (what QE that is escapes me at present), ricochet range etc..

At first glance, with its superior Ballistic Coefficient, it seems likely to me that the template of a 6.5 Creedmoor would exceed that of a .308Win/7.62mm NATO. So a range templated for that calibre would not suit 6.5 Creedmoor (and any number of other calibres), whereas a range templated for 8.9mm - or what the rest of the world calls .338 Lapua Magnum, would.

I will never, no matter how long I live, understand why the hell the MOD didn't just use the designation assigned to the calibre by the people who invented it. Similarly I refer to .50 Browning calibre as that, never 12.7mm.

In short because of superior BC a round going over the backstop will fly further than a 7.62 round and land outside the danger area.

I found a comparison table that placed the Creed slightly behind 6.5x47Lap in ME and MV.
Someone somewhere has surely got hold of the wrong end of the stick.....bigtime.

Pete
As I see it, they are not interested in 6.5x47 or any of the other 6.5 cartridge sizes as the military are not shooting these - as civvies if the cartridge makes the range limits then it's generally OK. The military are moving over to using the 6.5c-m more and as such have looked at everything concerning them specifically and I believe there maybe some question as to the performance characteristics, and shooting of this cartridge has been stopped until investigations, and any changes needed, have taken place.

Plenty of time to thrash our chests in righteous indignation later if it becomes a total ban and not a partial suspension or 'military-only'. Save yourselves.

Anyway, 6.5c-m is so last decade. ;)

Good deals with Paul101, Charlotte the flyer, majordisorder, Charlie Muggins, among others. Thanks everybody.

Just received an Email from Landmarc MOD.
ALL 6.5mm ammo banned on Catterick Bellerby ranges.
Second Email, with some RED text, clearly states any club caught firing 6.5mm ammo on the ranges will be banned from Catterick complex & reported to NRA.

Well soon be asked the question by the constabulary "where are you now using any 6.5 calibre rifle" which was previously used on an MOD range.

Another cut. Must be getting close to the 100 by now.

Ummm… probably worth directing your question to HQ RM as they appear to have purchased one or two rifles in said restricted calibre?

Yeah, but saying its all 6.5mm is crazy. There's dozens of calibres which fire a 6.5/0.264" projectile. There's a few below plus god knows how many others that I've missed and whatever wildcats are out there. Might as well just go and upgrade for a 7mm and be done with it wallhead

6.5 Precision Rifle Cartridge
6.5mm Creedmoor
6.5mm Grendel
6.5-284 Norma
6.5mm Remington Magnum

6.5 Weatherby RPM
6.5×47mm Lapua
6.5×50mm Arisaka
6.5×52mm Carcano
6.5×53mmR
6.5×54mm Mannlicher–Schönauer
6.5×55mm Swedish
6.5×57mm Mauser
6.5×58mm Vergueiro
6.5×68mm
6.5-300 Weatherby Magnum
.26 Nosler
.260 Remington
.264 LBC-AR
.264 Winchester Magnum
