Bolt Lube

#1 Post by 20series »

Any recommendations for bolt lube?

I am now looking after the club rifles, for the most part I'm just using a light touch of gun oil but thinking with the use they get something a bit more robust might be needed, any suggestions for something like moly grease etc.

Cheers
Alan

I like Lucas Oil Red N Tacky if i'm using grease as it stays where you want it to and is good at high temperatures. Only down side, as the name suggests, its literally red and can look like rust in the right light 5mith

For bolts though i just lightly oil as you have been doing.

I'm currently using hypoy 75/90 gear oil.....designed for use in a high pressure metal to metal environment, it ticks the boxes for bolt lugs, and acts like a thin grease on the bolt body.
(I run a 33 year old car, so there's always a drop in the garage...)

I’ve tended to use Ballistol in nooks and crannies with a final wipe over to remove excess. I’ve stayed off grease in bolts simply because I didn’t want it catching grit etc. So far - so good

Never seen the need for lubing bolts, no moving parts under pressure, no high temperature running and the oil and grease just attract grit turning your lube into an abrasive.

For storage a light wipe with ATF does the job.

Now if I had an Mg 42 then I might think about some grease but for what we shoot never seen the need. My firearms are none the worse for it
