Its the saltpetre in it, Potassium Nitrate.
I use it mainly for making nitrated paper when I want to reduce BP case capacity or combustable cartridges.
I get mine by the lb from hobby sausage makking suppliers, it used as a preservative in processed food.

I had fun making my own match for my musket. Saltpetre and vinegar were involved but I can't remember the recipe. I bought sash cord as it wasn't treated with anything so made good match.
