I have been shooting black powder rifles since Noah was boy and have always enjoyed the experience, the smell and the smoke, that is what it is all about.
However, I have to admit that during the colder damper weather blackpowder is a bit messy. So I was thinking that I should find a substitute.
I have used Hercules 2400 in 577/450 Martini Henry and other similar calibres but I am not that happy using very small amounts of powder and lots of wadding in large necked cases.
What I am seeking is a bulk powder that will pretty much fill the case.......any recomendations please?
Black Powder substitute......

It still won't fill those big BP cases but it is the powder of choice for those seeking what you want.
You don't need to worry too much about air space with these fast burning rifle powders. In fact you don't even need to worry about some airspace with BP either.

Agree, 5744 works very well in my 45/70.
Have also successfully downloaded .458 lott to 'scary' low levels of powder producing excellent accuracy and no pressure signs.
