I'd stay away from the No5, good fun but if you are after accuracy then another model will serve you better.

The SIG is a good choice but how about a mil spec AR such as CMMG? That way you can simply add a 223 upper and you have your staright pull 5.56 for a lot less than a full rifle. Pop out two pins, swop the uppers and off you go. Check out Lantac who seem to be about the best at the moment but make sure you are sitting down when you price them up but remember you will be saving on the 5.56. Their straight pull uppers are chambered in 223 Wylde which allows the use of both 5.56 & 223 ammo. I would also think about Spikes but they have stopped production of 22s for the time being but you can still get their 5.56 uppers

Me too! I asked for 7.62mm/.308in in the application but the FEO said I had to choose one or the other.. A friend of mine is an RFD who has a complete reloading setup so for the time being I think I'll just go to his place.

You can never have too many AI's. They are both AI/AE's one with a moderator and shorter barrel. One of them is my son's who is yet to sort his FAC out

Think a .223 from LanTac is a bit over budget at the moment :(

Ideally I'd like to spend a max of £700.. A cheap Mosin would work but would the surplus ammo be suitable for longer ranges (300+)?.

Highwood Classic Arms have some very nice rifles at the moment, anyone dealt with them?

I know of Highwood and have heard nothing bad about them, an alternative would be Chris at C&G http://www.cgfirearms.co.uk/ Now if he still has any of his blonde 7,62x51 Norwegian Mausers then they would be well worth a look, there are a couple of owners on this forum.

I just like the No4 Mk1 and shoot a 4T however the Mk2 is equally nice.

On the MN front, the 180 Ball (Heavy) will get you to 800 yards but the 180 around these days is going to be 1950's machine gun ammunition and it is very hard hitting. I had a 100 rounds of the Heavy Ball with iron core and it was downright unpleasant to shoot in such a light rifle. The Light Ball is a lot nicer and still good to 600 yards.

CG appear to have a couple of those Norwegian Mausers for sale but they say they're 30-06 not 7.62x51.
