Having taken the trouble to download last year's Winter Journal, there were 15 pages of text and pictures on the 2010 Imperial Meeting.

This year's THREE pages, of which the majority were pictures, (all bar one of which was of Ed Compton, nice chap though he is). This is not merely light on content, it is devoid of it>

The Daily Reports on the NRA website during the Imperial give all the detail anybody could ask for. Do we need it all again? I quite like the new format.

For the thousands of people who do not, or cannot, read those reports online, it's not "again".

The report also needs to cover the important results and occurrences, rather than only mentioning those posted on the last day and almost only showing photos of one person.

It looks and feels very much like a consumer magazine targeted at the general public rather than a specialist journal for a niche audience. I'd feel quite happy handing a copy to one of my non-shooting mates knowing that he wouldn't get bored to tears after ten seconds.

Agreed that it lacks the depth of the old journal, which is what made that particular organ stand out.

I've read all the journals for the last 8 years and often found little to read in them. It made the NRA look like it only really cared about competition target rifle at Bisley and official TR tours. The new version is fresh and bright and should appeal to more people. A bit more depth would be good but it is just issue 1 of the new style. I'm sure the old version was disliked when it first appeared.

The NRA Journal is supposed to be a Journal of record not a gun magazine! A Journal of record contains results, tours, photos, minutes, obits and all the other things that need recording for posterity. How will those in the future know what happened in the past?

I made it my mission to make sure all disciplines were treated fairly and equally - it just happened that more target rifle stuff was written about. I'm fairly sure that the only things I rejected over ten years were TR articles!

Those who want lots of ads and pretty pictures will be happy; those who have an interest in past, present and future shooting are very disappointed!

Well we have had the two extremes now and the new format and decent articles is definitely a good step onwards and is the best thing I've seen come out of Bisley for a long time.

However the journal function is important to those feel it is so and I do not advocate its ommission and hopefully it will also fill the pages as well as things of interest to the mass of non TR shooters in the future.

Interesting how it was only the negative views of the magazine that were encouraged to repond back to Blaze, I've certainly written to them telling them what a good job they've done and how it is a good basis for the future.

I've shown the copies I've had to over a dozen shooters recently none of whom are NRA members and at best are ambivalent about the organisation with some being postively anti. To a one they have all been pleasantly surprised and have warmed a little to the NRA. To such an extent that I no longer have the two copies I originally had.

So maybe thats what the NRA needs cheaply produced Journal that functions as such and need make no excuse about being as dry as sticks and a quality magazine that represents and promotes guns and shooting in a positive accessable and inclusive way and isn't held back by tiresome reports and scores. My personal view mind.


I was certainly impressed and surprised by the effect the new magazine had on the non NRA shooters, it reached out and spoke to them in a way the old journal never did.
