Shotgun Speed Shooting

#1 Post by Blackstuff »

During a discussion on another shooting forum a half-joking p!$$ing contest arose regarding which shotgun platform (and then cartridge bearing system) provided the fastest loading/shooting method. Another poster brought up that he thought that back in the '70's' a test was done comparing shooting speeds between semi-auto/pump/double barrel guns and it was found that a 'self-opening' (i read as slack hinged - so the gun just flops open when the key is pressed) auto-ejecting side-by-side won.

Now i have some faint recollection of this test, but for some reason i think it was done in the late 80's, more to the point during the period between the Hungerford massacre and the 1988 Firearms Act. I think it was done to show that double barrelled guns could be fired just as quickly as higher capacity semi's/pump's when they were talking about bumping them onto FAC's, but i may have imagined that. :G :lol: - Any info on this would be greatly appreciated! smile2

I had some time spare after todays PSG so i decided to time a 10 shot load/shoot string and ended up with a time of 11.54 seconds, which, without wanting to sound bigheaded, seriously doubt could be beaten with loading two shooting two with a double barreller :? If anyone wants to give it a try, please post your results on here :good: I've got an O/U but it is very stiff and i know there's no way i could open it quick enough to come close.

EDIT: The YouTube linking seems to be broken?? :bad:

NICE............have to say emptying the gun looks a hell of a lot more fun than filling it.

I reckon around 15 seconds for an SxS ... maybe a little longer for an OU.

I shot a flurry last month with 4+ seconds between pairs and I had a little time to spare. It was a 40 bird and I used 40 cartridges.

Could I get down to 12 seconds ... possibly not. Some might with a lot of practice, but one fumble and that would be it.

My son (8) was sitting next to me as I watched the clip and only caught the end of it, so I replayed it for him from the beginning - His reaction, "Awwwwsome! Can you get one of those pleeeeeeease!"

He was so disappointed that it was down to the operator as much as the shotgun! :lol:

I would love someone who knows what they're doing with a SbS to give it a go :good: I've asked at my clay club but noone will lend me their precious Grade 5 after i tell them what i want to do with it :roll: O:-)

Sandgroper - Don't show him any clips of a Saiga with a 20rd drum then or things might get even more expensive in a few years :-P

Cheers Chuck :good:

Although i normally just use my semi (with the magazine extension taken off) for a big annual flush shoot (525 clays :twisted: ) i would like to do it with my O/U (to avoid getting as badly burnt hands for one thing!) and i've been thinking about getting some of these, anyone got any experience - good or bad?;

Great for a second pair, but from then on will it give much of an advantage?

When shooting a clay flurry, I use a wooden board with pairs of 3/4" holes and the right spacing and need to finish one for my 16G with 18mm holes.

An OU gets a little warm with 40 shots - an SxS gets HOT !

There are people on the PSG circuit a LOT quicker than me, fortunately i don't have to shoot against them that often :lol:
