8 x 58RD for Ovenpaa of little faith

.405 Win could be good, MidwayUK stock it at GBP51.70/50 and it is Hornady brass which is a good start. It is a bit skinny around the rim and head juncture by around .040" but that is not a huge difference, especially given the low case pressures that will be used and I can also build a full length case.. Yup, I think the .405 trimmed to length and then sized with some quality annealing before and after should be ideal.

Anyone got a couple of old .405 Win cases I can have a play with?

.405 Winchester:
Rim dia ; 13,79mm
Case dia : 11,73mm .

1ll smaller will bulge the case!!!!

I did say they were possible alternative for converting to 8x58R, based on similar cartridges.

I have found "The handloaders manual of cartridge conversions" to be very good book and very specific in it's instructions. Unfortunately, it didn't have a reference for 8x58R so I based my recommendations on similar sized cartridges and what brass was being used for conversion.

If you could give me details on your source (Triebel's P.A.U.LA) I would be quite happy to add it to my reference books.

Triebel is the only european reamer maker, makes superior tooling , whith deliveries in short times.
PAtronen Und LAger (cartridges and chambers) is a software giving hundreds of cartridges and chambers dimensions for which, at a time or an other Triebel had a reamer made. on each one (CIP, Triebel, name of the wioldcat, etc...), and the latest CIP revisions are included.
For many, a brief description and history is added (in german). There is even blank drawings one can complete in case of specific reamer ordering or extra reference.
Drawings are very clear and directly dimensionned, contrary to CIP sheets with conventional dimensions.
I have complete CIP and SAAMI specification sheets, together with those of some US ramer makers, but the Triebel P.A.U.L.A is the one I always consult first.

Triebel is the reamer maker who primarily makes chamber reamers with separate throaters, allowing any throating variiations, angles, lenght...

Shoud you need custom reloading tools (and be prepared to pay for!!!), they can make them for all calibres listed.

Their products are not cheap, but quality has a cost.

Just an update. Woodshot a member here bought a Swedish 8 x 58RD Rolling Block of me and we tried it out at the week end using 8 x 56R cases. It was bitterely cold at Catterick but the rifle shot extremely well, just as good as my loads with the correct 8 x 58RD cases. At 300 yrds it was holding the Fig 11 target, Woodshot will need to update you on what happened at 100 yrds as I'd been RCO'ing in sub zero temperatures for 2 hours so handed over when we went to 100 so I could go in for a warming.

Anyway 8 x 56R cases work and work well in the 8 x 58RD. They were neck sized in a 8 x 58RD FL die and then that shooting fireformed them.

Various cast boolits were used with diameters going from .323" - .325", the heavier ones seemed to work best but Woodshot was the man on the spot. So hopefully he'll chip in here.

I shot the Swede on Saturday, but not having my spotting scope, all i can tell you is that it was shooting minute of rabbit hole at 100yd.
Jim seemed a bit more engrossed in setting up the scope on his Mosin Nagant.

I have spent many happy hours putting lead into rabbit holes in the stop butt at 100 yards, with the combination of my eyes and service rifle iron sights such accuracy is more than good enough for me

Saturday was a chilly day, but, when you are engrossed in shooting, you tend to forget the cold for a while.
Joe's right, as we did not have much time shooting at 100 yds, I was more involved trying to zero the Nagant, but the 'RB' shooting was very satisfying, just a few tweaks were required and it was hitting the spot, a real pleasure to shoot this rifle.
I had a few different cast boolits on the day, but I have to agree with Dromia that the longer (32.43mm) boolit was very accurate at 300 yds, the loads were 20.5G and 21G of N120, I think for the next trip I will increase the loads slightly.
