Hello from Somerset

#1 Post by Fullbore »

Hello everyone,

Been shooting clays for last 5 years and air rifles on an off for the last 25 years and just venturing into rifle shooting after finding a relatively local (25miles away) club, just starting my 3 month probation period before putting in my FAC application, so i will be badgering you all for lots of info along the way.

Cheers

Welcome to Full-Bore Fullbore! I asume/hope you intend to shoot fullbore with a forum name like that?

25 miles to your local club is quite typical for many shooters in the UK and some of travel considerably further to shoot. What have you shiot with the club so far and what do you fancy shooting yourself when it comes to putting in for your FAC?

Thanks (didnt expect that name to be available on here, picked it on a couple of other forums before)

Only shot a Ruger 22/10 .22Lr in light & heavy barrel version at the moment but i think i can shoot whatever the club has in its armoury (apart from LBP) when my full membership comes through, they currently shoot upto .45 cal but this maybe upgraded to .50cal if they get their planning permission for 100m range.

As for what to put on the FAC, well i'm not sure at the moment as before a couple of weeks ago i thought i was going to be limited to .22 rimfire for a year or so before applying for a variation to move up but now after trawling a few forums and speaking to the club it appears i could apply for anything they shoot there, which was a bit of a revelation, so its opened up a whole new world for me, so i really need to look at economics as in prices for ammunition and guns but currently my thoughts before badgering the forums for info are:

LBP
.22lr for practice
then move up to
.223 or .308 for undecided target dicipline (benchrest or f-class, something along thos lines)

So open to advice on best beginners CF rifle i.e make/calibre/scope that are not too pricey to purchase and use

Heh! We get to help you spend your money, always a fun thing.

.22LR makes perfect sense and as long as you are not hung up about owning the latest and greatest .22 rifle you can pick up some absolute bargains, as an example there have been a couple of threads on .22LR bench rest with rifles like the Martini International, Dave 101 springs to mind as he posts a lot of good stuff on the .22 along with a few others.

Benchrest and/or F/TR can get very expensive very quickly and a GBP500 budget can acquire another zero on the end by the time you have added 'scopes, custom actions and reloading equipment and supplies. Better to start off at a good club level with a reasonable .308/7,62x51 and get out and have some fun. I routinely shoot to 800/1000 with milsurp and get on OK and only yesterday was shooting 1200 with a Hunting/Sporter rifle and hitting the black bit!

Dont forget to add a .303 to your shopping list, an SMLE/P14/No4Mk1 or similar is essential in all good shooters cabinets!

welcome to the forum. Have you thought about black powder? You can buy a .577 as an antique and when you want to shoot it put it on your licence. Thats how I started. There is so much choice, enjoy it
