Southern Gun Company .308 straight pull

Has anyone else seen one of these? I saw one on Bobs trade stand at Bisley last year. I am sure that he said that he would be selling them in late 2010 and that the retail price was around £1800.

So far I have not heard or read anything about them, but then there is little on the 9mm and they are certainly in circulation. I wonder if the 9mm fiasco has taken all his time.

If anyone is attending the trade show in Newark, I would ask that you keep an eye out for him and see if the project is still on.

Better still would be if Vince could get his hands on one for a review.

Laurie Holland is the SGC AR15 guru - he has a 308 as it happens but we are supposed to be rebarrelling it in 6.5 Creedmore - when we get the reamer!

But, if Bob is reading this forum - we are happy to review anything for Target Shooter.

Do you think the 9mm lever release mechanism will make the transition to a mouse gun or even 308?

There was lots of discussion about that when they released the 9mm, If I remember correctly (i'm probably wrong as usual) it wont work with the bigger cartridges due to the design of the action. I think it works along the lines of the blowback .22 semis as opposed to a more conventional gas pipe and piston on a "real" semi-auto.

I agree - I had read the reasons why it won't work but can not quote them!
Seem to remember that the Parabellum round lends it self to this design nicely but any case which is not straight and has a shoulder has problems extracting.
I am not a AR owner but have heard many discussions where by they mention which cases rounds / loads are easier to extract than others using the straight pull configuration.

Certainly when I saw Bobs .308 I mentioned it to a semi knowledgeable shooter and he thought that due to the extraction issues, it may be a beast to handle.

The Lever Release Action works as a straight blow-back design, therefore it wouldn't be safe to use it for rifle calibres due to the amount of pressure produced.

I thought SGC had been making straight-pull AR-10's for years? They certainly were when i bought my Speedmaster 5 years ago

Personally, having previously bought two SGC AR's, I would never again buy from Bob....
