Hi
Its my first post on her so if this very same question has been asked recently I apologise.
I am reloading the following for my Tikka T3 varmint 223 1 in 12 with no complaints but wondered if anyone had data for a 40g vmax head for this rifle. Use will be foxes only.
Brass - Once fired Lapua Match
Primer - Federal Match
Powder - 26.5b BLC 2
Heads - Hornady V Max 55g
Thanks in advance
Colin

No direct experience however I can give you the theoretical data with QL which would be a starting point, what OAL are you building to?
Re: tikka t3 varmint 1 in 12
Colin,
I use the 50 & 55 gr Vmax - but not the 40s
I can post the data for my loads if you like as guidance

For the 40's built to 2.260" OAL. BL-C2 looks a tad slow and this is for a SAAMI Spec so a lower chamber pressure
Code: Select all
Cartridge : .223 Rem. (SAAMI)
Bullet : .224, 40, Hornady V-MAX BT 22241
Useable Case Capacity: 26.987 grain H2O = 1.752 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 2.260 inch = 57.40 mm
Barrel Length : 20.0 inch = 508.0 mm
Powder : Hodgdon BL-C2
Predicted data by increasing and decreasing the given charge,
incremented in steps of 2.0% of nominal charge.
CAUTION: Figures exceed maximum and minimum recommended loads !

2.250" gives a marginal change

Re: tikka t3 varmint 1 in 12
Hi
Im using that length as it was given to me by a lad that reloads for a very similar rifle.
I have just measured them straight out of a box of Federal V Max 55g and they are showing 2.240 (56.90).
What cartridge length do you use with your OAL of 2.300?
regards

Colin
My cases are trimmed to 1.750" - the reason I came to this length was from using a "shed OAL" gauge and then working back slowly to find the most accurate length from the OAL gauge - this gives me .005" off the lands and in my remi 700 it really does shoot one hole groups at 100 yards. (I use H322) (19" heavy Barrel, cut and re-crowned by Stuart @ Osprey Rifles, with a target crown)

Re: tikka t3 varmint 1 in 12
Perhaps I will try increasing the OAL in .005 increments and see what happens.
Thanks again for you help.
