2012 Czech Police International Sniper Competition
A small band of my friends from another website (UK Varminting) have just returned from a competition in the Czech Republic.
They took part in the 2012 Czech Police International Sniper Competition, competing against police and military teams from Czech Republic, Russia, Ukraine, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Germany, Italy, Israel, Mongolia and the USA.
146 personnel shot as both individuals and pairs.
Our best performer in the individuals was placed 5th overall (ex 146).
In the team placings, the pairing of my partner (who came 5th iundividuals) and I were placed 9th (ex 73)
Four pairs travelled to the competition from the UK, two of the pairs carried on to the World Championships in Hungary, which is taking place this weekend.
We travelled to the comp, arriving sunday evening, where we stayed overnight at a town near the military area where the competition took place.
The following day we spent a very interesting visit to the CZ factory and were given a guided tour of the vast site. We had the opportunity to see all the processes involved in the manufature of the various weapons and machine parts made there.
We also had the opprtunity to shoot the new .223 assault rifle, Skorpion 9mm Semi auto and pistols.
A very interesting visit.
Tuesday took us to the competition billets and once booked in and unpacked, we headed to the range for zero check and evening meal.
Wednesday morning we had to be at the range for 07:00, where after breakfast, there was an opening ceremony, final competitor number allocation and start of the various details.
No sighters (as one would expect in such a comp) timed stress tests, small target scoring areas and unpredictable winds were the problems we faced.
My oartner and I were shooting 6.5x47's
Another pair were using 308's
We all used a card system for drop and wind correction.
All I can say is i'm glad I relied on it as once one gets used to using the card, it becomes a moments task to read, and make corrections for any condition.
Far, far simpler than electronic devices.
Anyway, some pics
Opening Ceremony
Example of typical detail briefing:
500 mtrs - 5 shots prone
250 mtrs - 2 shots prone (in 10 seconds) when tapped on the ankle - stress test.
150 mtrs - 1 shot prone (in 5 seconds) when tapped on ankle - stress test
Note small scoring areas on faces....
Results
(Remember: There are no sighters in this sort of competition! (and generally, mirage meant that fall of shot couldn't be seen on the targets either))
500 Mtrs partner
500 mtrs (me)
250 mtrs partner
250 mtrs (me) - note same shot fall and group size - but I didnt pick up on wind change.....
150 mtrs partner

There will be, no doubt be some UK detractors of tactical competition from internet-angry little people..Lets make this clear, we just enjoy shooting and shooting in competitions. Its one thing being able to steer a rifle, its quite another humping 50 lbs of kit for tens of miles and then making a shot in a difficult situation. None of us were in the latter boat; we simply entered the comp to participate and because we were invited :)
On that note, id like to thank those involved on the CZ side for their help and assistance in making this years trip possible.

I have been following the thread with interest at the other place and it sounds like a cracking time, well done to you and BD for making what sounds like a good pairing. I was surprised to see the number of AI's in use in the pictures and more PMII's than you can shake a stick at, a well established combination.
Looks like you were graced with good weather and fine company all round.
I would expect Claus to be shooting from DK.

Hi David
Claus wasnt there this year, which is a shame as he is good company.
Competition was very stiff, basically the european countries send their best tactical teams to the event to participate.
FSB, Urna, Omega, Alpha teams to name but a few - rapid intervention, anti terrorist type chaps.
Matt and I were a good team, yes, the essence being constant comms regarding wind, confirming scope ajustments and COF. It helped also to remain calm on the FP's despite obvious stress induced COF on some details (adopting the "slow is fast mantra" seemed to work.
We were compounded a little by unforseen (read undetectable) wind pick ups and drop offs which would push the bullets out of the score area (tiny score area in some case)
My fourth time out there, very very enjoyable event, well run and no ego's in the bar afterwards...

Good post, sounds like a great event.
It's not the pace of life that concerns me, it's the sudden stop at the end!
Re: 2012 Czech Police International Sniper Competition
Ronin,
Looks awesome! How did you guys get invited?
In my opinion this type of practical shooting is much more exciting and challenging.
Perhaps something like this should be introduced at the Imperial Meeting to compliment the McQueen competitions?

basically, I get personal invite to the various comps held there every year.
It would be good to have something similar run at Bisley, although I suspect that the targetry would not be allowed - hostage, bad guy etc as its pretty non PC.
There are no sighters or wind flags in the comp (at all), so it probably wouldnt be popular with those who are used to that.
It is after all a military / police comp and the standard is very very high.
Ive lots more pics of the various COF and targetry and if you care to look on UKV / Snipers Hide there are several historical threads detailing the other comps we have attended over there, in Hungary and Slovakia.

Re: 2012 Czech Police International Sniper Competition
Andy, what distances do you shoot out to in such comps and what was the most common calibre in use?
Re: 2012 Czech Police International Sniper Competition
Distances this year were 30 mtrs, to 500 mtrs.
Seated - 150, 250, 300 and 400 mtrs (yes really)
Prone at all distances
Calibres - 338 LM, 308, 6.5x284, 6.5x47 and 6mm BR (one competitor, who used a single shot - he's won the comp four times already and came 3rd this year)
The most popular calibre was 308
Most competitors used issue rifles, issue ammo
Alot of AI AW
Many Sako TRG's although there was a common disatisfaction with trigger reliability with this rifle.
Alot of Blaser LRS 2 used by Russian FSB units and Unkranian SF
Scopes, mainly PM11, IOR, Leup and some NF
There were some custom rifles there too, mainly Remingtons, a few Surgeons, Tikka and my BAT.
