John the Corn Snake

#1 Post by Christel »

John has just been fed and is of the opinion that another mouse would be good, this I can see because he goes "hunting" in the aspen.

Just wanted to share this lovely picture tongueout

Dave,

I did spot that article but just as I opened it John stuck his head out of his den and I did not think it was a nice thing to be reading while he was watching O:-)

John gets fed dead mice which come individually wrapped in little black body bags, apparently this is acceptable as opposed to slinging in a couple of live mice. John lived in Denmark for many years on a diet of one live mouse once a fortnight which I was not happy about. When he came over Christel started him on dead mice and he seems to like them.

Although I named him 12-13 years ago I have never been impressed with the idea of a snake in the house but eventually he ended up here last September and I must admit he is quite an endearing chap or chappess.

Never sexed him, no need to as we do not want to breed. So it is John or it could be Johnette :P

He is lovely company, very curious, doesn't like his nose touched though.

Stopped at a snake sanctuary in South Africa and they have been banned from all the pet shops! So, they breed their own mice and rabbits.

They had some massive monitor lizards, which just lumber around. But drop a live mouse in there, and they are lightening fast.

I have some real close-ups of a Boomslang and a Rinkhals from SA along with a Diamondback Rattlesnake in the USA.

Polchraine,

I would love to see those pictures!

I wonder why they were banned? The zoo I worked for many moons ago bred their own mice and rats. Simply because when you need that many to feed all your snakes then it makes sense to breed them yourself.

In all case there is nothing between me and the snake except the camera and lens ...

I wouldn't recommend feeding live rodents to anything - apt to be a tad illegal, I think.
I do remember that when Windsor Safari Park was closed, after Gary Smart sold it to Trident TV, the staff there were not getting paid regularly so started up a pet creche ( shades of Monty Python's " Holiday Home for Pets Pie Company" here...).
When little Johnny or Jemimah came to collect their ickle bunny they were invariably told it had pined away and died.
Actually, the park was on its uppers, and the pets were fed to the animals and the money went in someones pocket.
There was a big fuss when the beans were spilled.
This would have been the late 70's
