Well I wouldn't say that, seen some ar15 clones with a forward assist that does not even work, and there for aesthetic purposes only.
Mine actually works, but I suppose originally designed for a 5.56 round, due to failure of round extraction, they all have them.

Like our little finger, is it really needed, rather have it here than not :grin:
Forward assist won't help if there's failure to extract. The theory was that if a case failed to go fully into battery then you could push it in with the forward assist. Once you fired it the gas system would eject it.
My 5.56 AR-15 is fitted with the standard forward assist, never had reason to use it or would want to because if the case won't chamber normally it's going to be a bugger to extract manually.
