"Ub" denotes "Ubung" (training) , therefore yes for training recruits

Thank you Tovarisch, I forgot the training bit goodjob

The East Germans also had an equivalent round in 54r for training that used the same 123gr bullet as an AK round and these were produced in Hungary especially for the East German military and had a black bullet in a grey steel case, usually with a "21" factory headstamp.
