Just been looking at the scores in the Queens final.....winning score 297. (Swing and RUAG)

I then compared this with the scores in 1970.....winning score 281. (No4 Envoy and RG)

A score of 281 would have placed you 100th this year.

Better shooters, better rifles, or better ammunition ?

All three

Incidently the guy in 100th place had 149 going into the final, had a 70 with a miss at 900 yards then his rifle broke at 1000 yards (something to do with sight rail) - maybe if he had checked his rifle first . . . Never mind better luck next year

Interesting thought. I don't think that humans have got inherently 'better' (or more determined, harder training etc. etc.). Here’s a graph of the winning scores. If I knew the relevant dates I could overlay things like target dimension changes, changes of ammo (RUAG from 2009?), the switch from SR(A/B) etc.

Reply from John about his rifle reads:

'Heather

I used a Swing action with a Bartlein barrel (30” 1 in 13 twist 5R).

Can’t imagine who would be interested, however there you are!

I could use any advice he has to offer to help achieve winning the Queens ;)

An awful lot of Swings have won the Queens and the Grand - you don't need the newest flashiest kit to win.

I think you need practice - well I do anyway

Absolutely - any tips from the best are very welcome. The last time I had a go at the Queens (long time ago), I got counted out on a 102, so just getting to the next round would make me happy...and to get to the final would cross one off my 'bucket list'...
