New FAC - what to buy?

Hello all,

New FAC holder seeks advice! Sorry you must get lots of this type of question?

My certificate allows the following:

.22LR + moderator x 3 (logic being - 1No each of tactical, semi auto rifle style and bolt action)
223/5.56 bolt action
.38 / .357 under-lever
9mm long barrelled pistol (I did ask for this to be push release lever - will change when required)
Shotgun - section 1

I usually shoot .22LR once a week and full bore pistol calibre once a month (at the moment), so the big question is what to purchase?

I have asked around my club and the general advice is to buy a Ruger 10/22. I have looked at standard 10/22’s and also the SR 10/22 (looks a bit tactical style). By the time I have speced it up to what I want it’s about £800 for the 10/22 (Rimfire Magic) and £1000 for the SR22 (local shop) – seems a lot for a 10/22, maybe not?

I quite like the tactical style and may look at the competion side of things.

I have spoken to Paul at Lantac and e-mailed Mark Bradley of Bradley Arms to discuss spec and price. Also looked at many websites including SGC for their V22.

I am leaning towards a Lantac Raven (1st choice) or their CMMG - but any thoughts and guidance before I place an order and spend my hard earned would be much appreciated.

If I buy the Raven then its one purchase (its quite expensive) until I save up but if I buy something less expensive say the CMMG then I could purchase a CMMG and an under-lever.

Being an engineer the quality of the workmanship within the Raven must be seen, its outstanding.

I am also having my Fabarm semi auto converted to section 1 so that I can try PSG.

Also looking for small bore and full bore clubs around North Manchester to try.

Lantac Raven, good choice and I agree about the engineering. Get a 22 and add a 223 upper as and when. 9mm LR, tread carefully and do your research. Be prepared for various levels of heartache and frustration with that one. Worth it once you get it working. 28/357, has to be a Marlin.

As for ranges/clubs, easy choice - Diggle as it caters for everything and is open 7 days unless pre booked.

Agree with Mike, expecially the Marlin..and TRY before you buy of course..shoot as many as possible if you can.

Diggle or Rossendale Fusiliers R & P Club are the ones for you. Diggle is an AMAZING range and as mentioned is open virtually everyday of the year. They've only just started to do PSG though. Rossendale has some PSG zealots that will get you up and running in no time (Mick and Ian).

After listening to much advise I decided to purchase the ubiquitous Ruger 10/22 for my first FAC purchase.

Many of us do, this was my first purchase and my first sale ! If you get a good second hand one you will not lose any money and they are a lot of fun. Think about upgrading the trigger and the extractor, along with the bolt hold open, all for just a few quid makes a reasonable gun into something so much better

Being new try to shooting try as many different rifles (and disciplines) as you can its really easy to get carried away with flash websites and range reviews, like everything in life its all down to personal opinion. My advice to anyone starting out is try before you buy (if you can) and don’t compromise on what you really want... but be sure of what you want before you buy !

What I have now is very different to what I thought I wanted in the start, luckily by the help of some good honest shooters they help me make my choices !

As for the rest of your selection .... good choices I would have suggested a .308 rifle as well. Perhaps a LBR in .357 could be simpler from a logistical point of view.

I have the stainless Ruger 10/22 (new Dec 2012) and I am now wishing I had bought the Rimfire Magic (not that much more for a custom rifle).

Understand now what you mean, about first bought and first sold.
