Well I almost got myself into trouble!

Spotted on Gun Trader a lovely Kel-Tec KSG (lovely to me at least) for a reasonable price. I thought it would make a brilliant PSG gun so I contacted the seller. He was a little Cagey, replied twice to most of my mails and seemed in a bit of a rush to sell. I asked about RFD fees and he said he'd happily send it that way, even got his RFD to verify that I could have it as S1 after he told me it would cost extra to deactivate and I advised I wanted live.
I mentioned the price and it shot up by £150, checked the listing and he was right, it was on for £650. I knew it had been on for less so did a cached search and got the advert with the lower price.
In the mean time the seller had agreed to the lower price and was pushing for payment.
Something was bugging from the back of my mind.
Checked on here and there it was, the barrel is too short for a section 1 pump!
Double-checked with my FLO and I was right.
That could have been an expensive and dangerous mistake!

14 rounds to start isn't bad, I was also working on a speed loader too. You live, you learn :-)

Looking at the Kel-Tec KSG I would have thought a major issue would be the overall length as much as the barrel length. Shotguns especially older ones do slip through the net sometimes, a favourite being the rim-fire 9mm smooth bore bolt action 'Garden guns' of which I have seen a couple with 23" barrels on S2 tickets. Another interesting one was a reproduction smooth bore musket I spotted at a fellow RFD's shop, they had sold it a couple of years before, taken it back recently in PX for something different, always S2 and then someone decided the barrel looked a tad short and measured it. Turned out it was S1... Quite when/where/how this had happened was unknown as the owner had not modified it and the importer sold them as S2.

Not sure about S2, I know only pump and semi S1 have to comply with the longer length. I thought all S2 smooth bore had to be 12/24? With such a poor, self-serving proof system in place I'm not surprised things fall through the cracks.

Semi-auto and Pump action shotguns, either S1 or S2 have to have a minimum 24" Barrel with a minimum overall length of 40"
If I recall correctly all other forms of shotgun just have to meet the minimum 24" barrel requirement.
If S1 then anything other than Pump or S/A can meet the 12/24 rule (If I recall correctly)

Yup, S1 Pump and S/A must conform to the 24/40 however a single shot, side by side or O/U could be legally held on S1 under the 'old' 12/24 (300/600 for the metric types)

What about lever action? Could really do with more 12g levers if they are allowed as 12/24
