Sec1 shotgun length

#1 Post by walesdave »

Hi All

Planning on filling my Sec1 slot in the near future and have been looking at what's around.

Wondering about the barrel and over-all length for a Sec1 semi.

Looking online the consensus appears to be an over-all length of 40 inches is required but some sites say a 24 inch barrel minimum as well - others say barrel doesn't matter as long as O/L is 40 inches.

I've looked in the latest guidance (2014) and under section 2.8 it says...
"the 1988 Act raised to the prohibited category (see Chapter
3) all self-loading and pump-action models which are either short-barrelled (under 24 inches)
or short in overall length (under 40 inches). For the purpose of calculating overall length any
detachable, retractable or other movable butt-stock should be disregarded. References to
‘shotguns’ in the 1968 Act may be taken generally to mean section 2 shotguns, rather than
those subject to sections 1 and 5 of the 1968 Act, unless otherwise stated
."

Could I take the high lighted section above to mean section 1 shotguns aren't subject to the section 2 shotgun lengths stated?

Any advice before I treat Gwent Firearms Licensing to another round of 'I know the guidance better than you do' **** FYI: I've won the last two rounds shakeshout

Section 2.8 is the important section

If it's below EITHER of the TWO LENGTHS -24" barrel, 40" overall - then is is PROHIBITED.

So, min. 24" bbl AND a min. 40" total length.

It's amazing how many people misunderstand that BOTH min. lengths apply...

The confusion stems from the latter length criteria: as this ONLY applies to semi-auto & pump-action shotguns (regardless of magazine capacity)

Cheers for the reply saddler.

Looking around a bit more, I've found this...http://www.publications.parliament.uk/p ... uc9505.htm
"Select Committee on Home Affairs Minutes of Evidence.
C. Controls on Shotguns
DEFINITION OF 'SHOTGUN'
...........Short-barrelled "assault shotguns" (self-loading and pump action shotguns with barrels of less than 24 inches or overall length of less than 40 inches). These are prohibited weapons requiring the Secretary of State's authority. .........."

Wonder if it's worth asking my local FEO for an opinion? I don't pick arguments just for fun, but I do believe we should challenge when areas need clarification....

Yep, so if you have either under the limit then it's prohibited, meaning both need to be longer to be ok.

And Saddler, bbl? Really? It's one of the most stupid abbreviations and should be left on American forums only! I thought better of you ;-)

In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

I'd always thought that Sec 1 shotguns "other than semi auto and pump" were subject to the standard section 1 lengths, eg. 12" barrel /24" OAL- I'm sure I've seen "coach guns" for western shooting well under 24" barrel.

Any shotgun with a magazine capacity exceeding 2 cartridges must have a 24" (or greater) barrel.

S1 semi's and pumps must have a 24" barrel or greater AND have an OAL 40" or greater, otherwise they're S5.

S1 lever action guns must have a 24" barrel or greater but don't have the 40" OAL restriction.

O/U, SbS, single barrel etc can be held on S1 if they have a barrel shorter than 24", at which point they then must obey the 12" barrel / 24" OAL restriction.

Not quite, Mark.

Lever or bolt shotguns on s1 have to comply with the 12/24, not 24/40 rule.

Let's see if I can summarise...

Section 2

SxS, o/u, lever and single barrel and bolt. - 24" barrel, no OAL.
pump and semi - 24" barrel, 40" OAL.

Section 1

Lever, sxs, o/u, bolt, single barrel - 12" barrel, 24" OAL
Pump and semi - 24" barrel, 40" OAL.

I'm sure that's it....
