Hello All
Hi there, Just wanted to say hi from a wet Northern Ireland. I have recently re kindled my interest in shooting. I had only used shot guns for my recreational past time.
I am now swaying towards a .22 and would love for those in the know to guide me on this. I have decided to hunt a few rabbits and do a bit of target shooting. I would gain alot from anyone who can steer me in the right direction of which gun to think about buying.
I should hasten to add that I live in Northern Ireland so if there is anyone close drop me a message. County Down.
Regards

Hi .... welcome to FBUK!
A bolt action CZ452 or CZ455 or a Ruger 10/22 semi are probably the two favourite rimmies for rabbits etc. The .17HMR is also popular.

Re: Hello All
Hello and welcome
As Les says I would recommend either a Ruger 10/22 or a CZ452, depending upon whether you want a bolt gun (going to be a bit more precise) or a semi (going to be accurate enough for rats and bigger at modest ranges and can be tricked up for better accuracy or action target shooting fun).
Both are reasonably priced and usually work well out of the box. The biggest problem with the 10/22 is all the modifications (read 'must-have accessories) someone does before they even try the rifle, these often lead to a less reliable rifle and more money being spend to adapt/fit an issue that most likely wasn't there in the first place.

Re: Hello All
Hi and welcome!
Both the suggested rifles are a good first bet and available second hand for not a lot. New they aren't that expensive either, though the CZ is the 455 now and the new Rugers aren't quite as solid as the old ones (they have polymer trigger packs).
Target shooting wise it depends what disciplines, gallery rifle and mini rifle you need a semi auto.
For straight target shooting where time for each shot is less of a factor, you can probably extract more accuracy from a stock CZ than a stock 10/22.
Though a modified 10/22 might be more accurate than a CZ.
If you're going to join a target shooting club I recommend you go down, meet them and have a month or so shooting their rifles and chatting to them to get a good feel for both kinds of rifle and also an idea of what target disciplines you might want to start shooting.
Neither rifle is better than the other though.
Good luck and happy shooting!

Welcome to the forum.
I would also say a CZ452 for accuracy or a Semi Auto for rapid follow up shots, I was zeroing a semi auto Anschütz 525 last week and it was an impressive little rifle, cheap to buy, barrel is easily removed for transport and it has a natty little deflector for spent cases which is handy when out lamping from a vehicle.

Hi Sureshot and welcome from a fellow newcomer, good to see someone else from our wee country.
As for rifles, CZ is hard to beat in terms of accuracy and value for money. I've shot a CZ452 American in .17hmr for just over 4 years and wouldn't part with it, great for rabbits and corvids. I've also shot a 10/22, a good light weight rifle, that shot well after a few mods, but in the end I preferred the bolt action CZ.
